ar festivals in India. The carnival is equally popular among locals as well as the tourists. They eagerly await the Goa Carnival. This festival is celebrated in the month of February for three days. This three days festival is celebrated mainly by the Christians. But the people of other communities participate in the carnival festival with equal enthusiasm. The Goa Carnival is time for fun and frolic. During carnival one can take enjoy of delightful dancing, boundless music and extravagant fun. One can also see during the carnival colourful procession, parades, and masked people in the streets of Goa. In fact, streets are crowded for three days during the Goa Carnival festivals. People from all over the country come to Goa during the Goa Carnival to participate in the carnival. Goa carnival provides tourists absolutely different shades of Goa.

The Goa Carnival is nothing but it is three days non stop festivals of fun & frolic, festival of happiness & joy.

History of Goa Carnival

The Goa carnival was introduced by Portuguese in the 18th century, who ruled Goa over 50 years, from 1510to 1961. Carnival means a complete holiday dedicated to fun-n-frolic and enjoying as a break from the daily routine stress of the everyday life. The word “Carnival” is derived from the Latin word “Carnelevarium” which means “take away the flesh” or “raise a gala storm”. The tradition of celebrating carnival spread out all over the world from Brazil that was the first country to play host to the carnival. Brazilian carnival is 5 days long held before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the fasting month of Lent dedicated to penance and abstinence.

It is said that the Goa Carnival, a three-day fest, had its birth in Goa during the era of K

ing Momo. He ushered in the Goa carnival just before the Lent season (Lent is the period of fasting and penance in the Christian calendar and corresponding somewhat to the Mohammedan fast before Ramzan Id).

This festival of Goa usually starts off on Sabado Gordo (Fat Saturday) and concludes on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday)-the eve of Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of the season of Lent. Carnival in Goa is much tamer when compared to the carnival in the other countries, but a madness of sorts nevertheless.

The Goa carnival is now a social festival that brings together the different sections of society. During the Goan carnival, a person is chose to imitate King Momo, who starts the three days non-stop carnival and distributes prizes among contestants for their excellent performance.
