Thiksey monastery
Built some 600 years ago, Thiksey monastery is one of the most spectacular monasteries in Ladakh region. Originally a part of the Gelukpa order, Thiksey consists of 12 levels ascending a hillside. The Gompa complex has 10 temples, a nursery and about 100 monks of the yellow – hat sect of Buddhism. After entering th
e main courtyard to the immediate right and up several steps is a new temple containing a large Buddha statue. The H.H. Dalai Lama constructed this Buddha, 15 meters tall, in 1980 to commemorate a visit to Thiksey. The statue was made under the guidance, supervision and direction of Kushok Nawang Chamba Stanzin, the present head Lama of Thiksey monastery. Thiksey has a pillar inscribed with the teaching of Lord Buddha. There is also an impressive library. Thiksey is the best place to watch religious ceremonies and get an insight into Ladakhi culture. In some festivals, archery competitions are organized in the compound behind Shalzang Chamba. Regular bus service for Thiksey is available from Leh and it is about 25 km from Leh.
Hemis monastery
About 45 km from Leh is the Hemis Gompa built around early 17th century that belongs to the Drukpa order. HEMIS is a must see on every tourist's itinerary. It is said that every Ladakhi Buddhist must visit this Gompa at least once in his lifetime. The monastery is built on a green hillside, on the west banks of the Indus and was built by Stagsang Raschegn, who was invited by king Singee Namgyal. The Gompa has well preserved Thankas and copper gilt statue of the lord Buddha, various stupas made of gold and silver and many auspicious objects. The Gompa boasts of an excellent library, well preserved frescoes and murals, silver gilt chortens and a Kashmiri lacquered wood throne. There is also an important library of books written in the Tibetan style and an impressive collection of "Thangkas".
Spituk monastery
Around 18 km from Leh, Spituk Gompa is situated on the hill top near Indus. Rinchen Zangpo the Great Translator who helped spread Buddhism in Ladakh named the monastery. Initially it belonged to the Kadampa School then during the life time of king Gragspa Bumide made it Gayluk Pa order. The Spituk festival held every year from 17th to 19th days of the 11th month.
Phyang monastery
This Gompa is situated on the road back to Srinagar from Leh. It is about 17 km west of Leh on the blue hill. This Gompa was founded in 15th century by Chosje Danma Kunja Dragpa in the time of King Jamjang Namgyal. Phyang monastery is also called Tashi Chosang, which mark the first established of the Dingung to teachings in Ladakh. There are some interesting sights. The Gompa belongs to the Red Hat Kagyupa Sect. The Gompa houses hundreds of 14th century Kashmiri bronze statues, thangkas and manuscripts. During July, a temple festival is held amongst the beautiful setting of the temple court yard and the ritual masked dances are staged here.
Lekir monastery
Just before Saspul there is a steep curve in the road, which leads one to the Lekir Gompa. Lekir Gompa is located at the distance of about 52 km from Leh. The Gompa was founded in 14th century by Lama Dhwang Chosje, a great champion of meditation. This Gompa has a monastery school where young monks are taught the scriptures.
Alchi monastery
Around 69 km west of Leh, Alchi monastery is an unusual little Gompa near Saspul. It is the only monastery in Ladakh on lowland. The Gompa is renowned for its massive Buddha statues and intricate woodcarvings. Alchi also has the only examples of Kashmiri -style wall paintings available in the area. There are also numerous chortens lying around the villages.
Rizong monastery
Rizong is also known as Yuma Changchubling about 73 Km from Leh and around 6 Km from main road, founded about 138 years ago by the great Lama Tsultim Nima. Gompa belong to Gelukpa order. Dress and food provisions are provided for all member of the community by the Governing body of the monastery. The monastery is sited in most solitary positions and there is a nunnery place called chulichan down the monastery. The work of spinning wool, milking, and extracting oil for the temple lamps has to be performed by all the nuns.
Lamayuru monastery
Perched on hilltop with a small village at the base of the hill, Lamayuru monastery is around 125 km best of Leh. Lamayuru Gompa is 10 km from Kargil and overlooks the mighty Indus River and a valley, and the village of Lamayuru. This monastery is also known as the Yung Drung or Swastika monastery. The Gompa complex houses one of the oldest libraries in the region, which has extensive books and other literature on the Tibetan Kagyupa Sect. Local festivals are organized in February - March and July.
